Helen McIntosh's Publications

Helen has written three books about stroke since suffering a stroke. They are 'An Interrupted Lunch - a story of stroke and rehabilitation', a small book of poems titled 'Acceptance - a life changed by stroke' and the children's book 'Grandpa's Had a Stroke'.

'An Interrupted Lunch - a story of stroke and rehabilitation '

This honest story of quiet achievement contains thoughtful reflections about the process of recovery, its joys and sorrows and the patience needed to achieve every step forward, however small. We laugh as Helen Laughs at herself, and we cry as she did. Helen also gives us an insight into her strength.

"This story will be an inspiration for people moving through recovery, as did Helen. However, it also has many lessons for professionals learning to work with people undergoing rehabilitation - doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and so on." Dr Murray Seiffert, Director of Community Development, Anglican Diocese of Melbourne.

'Acceptance - a life changed by stroke'

"This small book of poems written and introduced by Helen McIntosh takes the reader through different aspects of her suffering and frustration, at every point undergirded by faith in God. What struck me forcibly is the way ordinary life is made so difficult by such a disability as stroke, and how small things such as a helpful taxi driver mean so much. The book ends with a brief article about stroke." - Dr. Charles Sherlock, editor of Christian Book Newsletter.

'Acceptance - a life changed by stroke' is also available on audio cassette from the RVIB (Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind) Talking Book Library 85-87 High St., Prahran, Victoria, Australia, 3181

'Grandpa's Had a Stroke - a book for children'

"It is very important for a child to understand what has happened to a parent, grandparent or other relative or friend affected by stroke. In this way the child can approach the person without fear and can understand and be supportive in the person's often long rehabilitation process. 'Grandpa's Had A Stroke' will be very useful and rehabilitation professionals should recommend it to parents and other adults for such children. The book will also be a useful tool for teachers and would play a part in producing a community better educated about stroke." Jennifer Guild, Physiotherapist and Feldenkrais Practitioner.

'Grandpa's Had A Stroke' has been reprinted in the UK and has been translated into Japanese.
