The Stroke Association of Victoria is proud to be celebrating National Stroke Week from 31 August – 6 September.
This year we’re celebrating everyday Victorians who contribute to our stroke community.
The Chinese Stroke Support Group has been supporting stroke survivors and the elderly Since 2012. The group is held at the Box Hill Senior Citizen Club and is run by volunteers who have a passion to help others in order to make the community a better place.
We have monthly activities which include health and safety information sessions, festival celebrations and birthday celebrations. For our members, it is very important to get involved in the community and communicate with each other – we focus on encouraging and uplifting each other to develop a positive attitude towards stroke recovery.
Exercise is very important for keeping healthy both physically and mentally. According to research, regular exercise is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety and depression and improves quality of sleep. Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of us are not coping well with the situation because we are not able to communicate with friends or even family members in person. Exercise has became the only reason for going out, and it is important to grow the habit.
We hope to grow the Chinese Stroke Support Group by having more volunteers and elders join. We hope that there will be more people aware of the risk of having a stroke and how to prevent it occurring.
